PODCAST S:2 EP:13 “Being Publicly Private on IG”
Hey everyone, it's Ani here. For those who don't know, I've been in the hair industry for 15 years. Recently, I shifted my focus to helping beauty professionals up their social media game. Let's be real: without social media these days, you're dead in the water.
I’ve had courses on social media in the past, but the landscape changes so quickly that keeping them up to date was a nightmare. So, I created The Content Coven, a membership where I upload new videos and tutorials every month to keep everyone updated. I also host a monthly Zoom session for members to bring their content ideas and hooks, and I help them rework and improve them. I aim to build a supportive community in the beauty world, which can be hard to find.
I recently started vlogging, inspired by a stylist named Kain from Sydney, Australia. He vlogged daily to grow his followers, and I found his content so funny and endearing that I decided to give it a shot myself. Despite being a private person, I challenged myself to vlog every day until I hit 100K followers. It’s not just about the numbers; it’s about pushing myself to share more of my personal life.
The response has been… surprising. People have told me they love that I'm a normal person with a regular life. They appreciate seeing someone who isn’t always traveling or doing extravagant things. It's been interesting to see how many people find comfort and connection in just a normal life.
One conversation that stood out to me was with an entrepreneur friend who is hesitant to vlog because her house wasn’t “fancy.” I’m sure everyone can resonate with that, being nervous about not having the fanciest of things.
It’s been a great lesson in understanding that you don’t have to have a glamorous life to be interesting. People value authenticity and the small moments that make up our days. If you’re thinking about sharing more of your personal life but worry you're “not interesting enough,” remember that your everyday life can be fascinating to others.
Start small, share once a week, and see how it feels. Just be yourself and have fun with it.
And please, if you’re doing voiceovers, don’t use that weird, sexy whisper voice. It’s creepy. Just speak normally and be yourself. I hope this helps you get out of your head a bit and encourages you to share more of your life.
If you have any questions about vlogging, feel free to reach out. I’m always happy to help.
