PODCAST S:2 EP:16 “More Than.... Extensions FT. Christine Woods”
In this latest episode of Mourning Tea, I had the pleasure of chatting with Christine Woods, also known as Paint and Pixie on Instagram. Christine is an expert in the world of hair extensions. We dove deep into the complex and ever-evolving world of extensions, breaking down everything from methodologies to the importance of customization in client care.
Christine's Journey: The Power of Adaptability
Christine shared her experience as an extension educator and how she’s on a mission to offer a different kind of education through her platform, More Than a Method. Unlike traditional, rigid approaches to applying extensions, Christine emphasizes the importance of tailoring methods to fit each client's needs, especially as stylists advance in their careers. She’s passionate about educating stylists on the intricacies of different materials and how they impact various hair types, from low-density hair to clients with scalp sensitivities.
Blending Extension Methods: A Growing Trend
One of the big topics we touched on was how the extension industry has evolved, particularly the trend of blending different extension methods. For years, stylists were often divided by method: you were either Team K-Tips, Team Wefts, or Team Tapes, but never a mix. However, things have changed, and now stylists are experimenting with combining methods to achieve better results. Christine and I both agreed that this shift is exciting because it provides more flexibility and customization for clients.
Breaking Free from Industry Rules
We discussed how methods are often marketed as the "best" by brands, but the truth is, every client is different, and so are their hair needs. Christine talked about how stylists can sometimes feel pressured to stick to one method or brand because of marketing or industry trends. However, the best stylists learn to break free from these rules and develop their own approach. It's about understanding that what works for one client might not work for another, and that’s okay. Flexibility and customization are key.
The Extension Industry's Mental Health Challenge
A significant part of our conversation focused on the mental health of stylists in the extension industry. The competitive nature and constant influx of information can leave many stylists feeling overwhelmed and confused. Christine emphasized the importance of self-assessment, not just in terms of skill but in managing emotions like jealousy and imposter syndrome. She shared how critical it is for stylists to give themselves grace, especially when they're feeling unsure about their work. "Nobody gets everything right at first," she reminded us, adding that the journey to mastering any skill takes time.
Collaboration Over Competition
One thing Christine and I both stand by is the belief that collaboration trumps competition. In an industry where the "mean girl" energy can run high, it’s important to lift each other up. Success for one doesn’t mean failure for another, and the more we support one another, the better off we all are. Christine shared that her business has always flourished when she’s chosen to collaborate instead of compete, and that’s a mantra we both hope will continue to spread throughout the extension community.
Final Thoughts: There's No One-Size-Fits-All
Wrapping up, we talked about the growing need for stylists to embrace a more client-centered approach to extensions. There is no one "best" method. Every client has unique needs, and it’s the responsibility of stylists to continue learning, experimenting, and perfecting their craft. Whether it’s mixing methods, understanding different hair materials, or knowing when to refer a client to someone else, it’s all about what’s best for the person sitting in your chair.
This conversation was filled with laughs, real talk, and a ton of valuable insight. If you’re a stylist or someone curious about the world of hair extensions, Christine’s wisdom is definitely something you don’t want to miss.
