PODCAST EP:5 “Salon Owner!? Booth Renter!? Commission!?”
Which is better!?
Which one is right for you!?
"WHAT HAPPENS IF I CHOOSE THE WRONG ONE?!"
I know you've had all of those questions and felt the stress and pressure of making the "right" choice.
Let's go over the pros and cons of each, AND the personality traits that will help in each category.
I also want to be clear that you can LEARN and GROW into ANY role. Just because something doesn't come naturally to you, does not automatically exclude you from any decision.
SALON OWNER
Pros:
- You get to create the vibe, and the settings
- You create the culture inside of your salon
- You get to choose your coworkers and train them however you would like
- You get to guide your staff and truly make a difference in their lives
Cons:
- You take full responsibility for inventory and ensuring the staff has what they need
- You will ultimately be the one dealing with any angry clients, or staff drama
- It is a heavy weight and pressure to hold
BOOTH / SUITE RENTER
Pros:
- You get to create the vibe, and the settings
- You create the culture inside your salon
- You create your own schedule
- You choose which clients you do or do not take
- The salon/building pays for utilities and fixes
Cons:
- You take full responsibility for inventory & having everything you need
- It is your responsibility to book clients and communicate with them
- You will ultimately be the one dealing with any upset clients
- You must keep track of your income and put money aside for taxes
COMMISSION ARTIST
Pros:
- The only thing you have to worry about is showing up, doing pretty hair, and going home
Cons:
- You are not in charge of your schedule
- You do not have a final say in the clients that you take
- You work for someone else so you must follow their rules
At the end of the day, all options have pros and cons. You are not stuck to ONE for your entire career. You can start as commission and grow to own your own salon. You may even have your own salon and eventually choose to be commission.
One path is not considered "more" successful than another.
They are simply different paths!
